Walk 10/2007 – Three Shires Head from Buxton

Sunday 6th May 2007

We took an embracing walk in the Peak District. The weather was very windy, and as our path crossed over much open moorland the walk was referred to as ‘Bleak’ and certainly blew a few cobwebs away!

We crossed over the top of Axe Edge Moor and then followed a delightful stream to Three Shires Head. We had an enjoyable coffee break by the wider part of the stream and whilst doing so, were passed by a riding school excursion, some members obviously on their first ride as their riding position was precarious. The majority of the walk was flat moorland and described in the guide as very boggy with the potential “to suck your boots off” – thank goodness we have had a long dry spell recently, as it still was boggy but our boots remained in situ.

We passed by the famous ‘Cat and Fiddle’ pub, the second highest in England and seemed to be a great favourite for bikers on a Bank Holiday Sunday.

We descended in to the Goyt valley where we attempted to have a more sheltered lunch, but were interrupted by the start of rain; it was also pretty cold when standing still.

We had parked out of Burbage and so our walk was approximately 8 miles. Other than the sighting of an expressive lapwing very little wildlife was observed.

We concluded our day with a drink in the Devonshire in nearby Baslow – where the mileage calculations were deemed ‘most spooky’!
