Walk 02/2007 – Stanage Edge and Moscar Moor
Sunday 14th January 2007
This second walk of 2007 took in a good section along the top of Stanage Edge, near Hathersage and a record 17 walkers attended. Graham took the lead and Alan acted as sweeper in case anyone wanted to leap off the edge!
The sun shone gloriously all day although it was a chill wind that greeted us once we climbed from the car park onto Stanage Edge summit. We wandered along the edge to High Neb where there were excellent 360-degree views.
After dropping down to retrace the edge along it’s base we were able to look up and watch the climbers before passing through a ‘cemetery’ for old millstones. The climbers have given the sections of the edge colourful, sometimes fanciful names - Marble Wall, Crow Chin, Goliath's Groove, The Tower, The Unconquerables, Mississippi Buttress, etc - and the edge currently has over 800 recorded rock climbs with more being invented every year.
After lunch in the sun we left the winter brown moorland and breeze to wander through green fields before heading back to the cars, an earlier than expected finish, and a visit to a pub in Hathersage for the obligatory refreshments.
