Beer by Rail

Saturday 5th July 2008

A total of eleven parcipitated in this leisurely tour of pubs using our fantastic rail network.

There was rather a crush getting on the train at Peterborough because of the Stamford Festival being on the same day. We must try and miss it next year. Our first stop was the brewery in Oakham where the beer was very good as usual. We had some lunch here.

We then went back to Stamford and located the Tobie Norris which some of us had never been to before. Whilst this pub’s standard beers are Ufford Ales, we were delighted to find them serving Abbeydale Absolution – a favorite for some of us. After a few pints here we went onto the King’s Head where the landlord again brought round some free savouries. The choice of beer between Abbot, Timothy Taylor and Woodeford’s Wherry was a difficult one.

Eventually it was time to head back to the station where our fantastic transport system having charged us twice as much as last year, failed to provide the train we wanted. So the taxi firms did a roaring trade in getting people back home.

Back at Peterborough, the remaining five of us had a final drink and Thai meal in the Brewery Tap.

An enjoyable day despite not making it to the Lord Burleigh for my annual pint of Fuller’s ESB.
