We commenced our day with a high quality breakfast, with plenty of choice, much needed for the pretty wet and invigorating windy weather that we would then have to embrace for most of the day.
Today’s circular walk was of 9 miles with some ascents around Harden Clough and Marsden Clough. On the whole there was more level walking in this walk with much of it taking a trip across pasture fields, although with little animal farmlife to see! We started the walk just north of the village of Holme, near Holmfirth where interestingly much of the BBC serial “Last of the Summer Wine” has been filmed. Our walk was less attractive at the start as we passed through a disused quarry site, and an old factory littered with scrap rubbish. As we progressed further it became much more scenic passing through colourful woodland and finishing by the picturesque Digley reservoir. Because of returning to a marshy terrain in places, we again observed the reddish coloured grouse plus a couple of stonechat perching on a nearby fence typically flicking their tails.
[Ed – there was also a discussion on “she–wees” which crops up from time to time on walks. This time there was mention of them being good for use when travelling in a car. This posed the question of whether you could get a hands free kit!]
Parallel to Sunday’s walking, as a group we were unknowingly creating a comedy farce script fit for the London stage! It is entitled “The Return of the Suitcase”!!
Angela wrote the first chapter by leaving her suitcase in the foyer on our departure and there it was left as it was not loaded into any of the cars. It had to be retrieved by returning to the hostel in the evening. Due to cramped travel conditions on the homeward journey the suitcase was then placed in the car in which Angela was not travelling. Due to a series of different and extraordinary misunderstandings she again said goodbye and drove off without the suitcase!! Another rendezvous had to be rearranged at the Woodman for the final return of that same suitcase!! On successive occasions we required our laughter muscles to cope with this farce.
A great weekend was had by all.
