Walk 08/2008 – Louth and Hubbard’s Hills

Sunday 6th April 2008

There were nine of us for this walk starting at Louth in Lincolnshire. The first part of the walk follows the river westwards and then south through Hubbards Hills which is unusual in being like walking through a deep ravine.

After crossing the A16 the route crosses open farmland with some decent views. Although the breeze had a chilly edge, we found a sheltered spot at Jack’s Furze for a coffee stop.

The walk then includes another pleasant woodland walk next to a stream culminating at the “whale–bone arch” which is showing considerable deterioration as it is now nothing like an arch (also it is not made of whale bone).

We managed to find some logs to sit on overlooking the lake at South Elkington Hall for our lunch stop. As we sat down we disturbed a small mouse who scampered away under one of the logs. As a result, some members of the group remained rather nervous through out the stop.

We had not found many pubs on our route and as we drove out of Louth we didn’t see any either, so we ended up in the Stags Head Inn at Burwell just south of Louth. This seemd a very good pub and we were able to complete the financial transactions before going our separate ways.
