Walk 28/2008 – Coombs Dale, Longstone Edge and Pilsley.

Sunday 14th December 2008

Only four intrepid walkers turned out for the final walk of the year in The Peak District. The weather during Saturday consisted of heavy downpours all day which may have put some people off. However by the time Sunday dawned the rain had all but petered out and this walk was completed in fine conditions. The rain had taken its toll, with the overriding feature of the day being one of avoiding mud and water which were abundant throughout in various guises, be it waterlogged footpaths, winter streams running along the footpath, ploughed fields and just good old plain mud. The walk itself consisted of a 10 mile circuit around the villages of Calver, Hassop and Pilsley and comprised a mixture of wooded footpaths, fields and a bit of road walking with one strenuous climb and a final slither down a steep slope aka mud slide into the village to finish the day in good time for tea at a Calver café.

A pleasant walk spoilt in part by the presence of a group of off road mini motor bikers racing around in the mud churning up the landscape, blighting the air with the smell of petrol and shattering the peace with the sound of revving engines.
