It was not a promising start to the day. The weather forecast was grim – lots of rain, possibly snow. Good job we all had our waterproofs with us, we will probably need them. However, all was well when two hours later we reached Maidenwell, near Louth for the start of our walk. Then the penny dropped, there must be two Louths and we had been studying the weather forecast for the one in Ireland!
Marian, our new walker was welcomed to the group. She had seen our website and thought we looked like a friendly bunch. [Ed – it’s surprising how misleading these things can be.]
We had a new walk leader for the day – David. He very competently led five ladies and Alan across rolling ploughed and green fields in this area of outstanding natural beauty. We even crossed a field saying “beware of the bull” and the bull had conveniently made alternative arrangements for the afternoon. We found a nice sheltered area for our coffee stop. Alan perched himself beside a giant haystack. However, the ladies did a quick risk assessment and decided there could be furry things ready to pounce from the hay, so we settled ourselves on the path to enjoy a stress free break. The farmer entertained us by riding past side saddle. Alan thought it was a shame that he hadn’t been able to get his leg over. [Ed – you do mean the farmer, don’t you?]
We continued our journey and enjoyed the bursts of warm sunshine on this lovely autumnal day with leaves swirling around us. Lunch was taken behind some trees serving as a windbreaker and overlooking lakes.
We saw lots of chapels on this walk and were reminded of the fact that John Wesley, a founder member of the Methodist movement was born near this area (Epworth, Lincolnshire).
After we completed our 8.5 mile circular walk which took us through Tetford and Worlaby, we found a suitable watering hole. It was busy when we first stepped in and we managed to clear the place quite quickly. We enjoyed refreshments whilst reflecting on our lovely day. We concluded that this walk (a repeat from two summers’ ago) was a good one; not too strenuous with a bit of variety.
