Beer by Rail

Saturday 18th July 2009

This year’s beer by rail was a little different. Firstly because the Great Northern Hotel was closed so that we could not have our first pint before we went to Stamford and secondly because there were some works on the line, so our train journey was by bus.

Nevertheless, nine of us met at Peterborough station and boarded the bus for Oakham. The beer and food at the Grainstore brewery were up to the usual high standards and so we were content by the time were got back on the bus for Stamford.

It was interesting to note that when the train is a bus, it leaves dead on time.

In Stamford we were joined by Cathy, Nigel, Alison and young Harry and fortunately the weather was good enough to sit outside.

We visited four hostelries in Stamford. Generally the beer was good, but the selection at the Green Man was disappointing as few of us found one we liked.

It was soon time to wend our way back to Peterborough, where eight of us finished up with an evening meal in the Brewery Tap.

The beer by rail continues to increase in popularity with thirteen participants this year.
