By the time we got to Bardney in Lincolnshire, we had watched the sun rise and the day had begun.
Our eyes had a quick scan of the remains of the Abbey, close to where we had parked our cars. Then Andy led ten of us across field paths and bridleways. We appeared to be following the route of a gas pipe as we kept seeing red and white striped poles on our journey. Our attention was drawn to a herd of sheep who seemed slightly agitated. On closer inspection, we saw a fox on the run, galloping off into the distance.
We ‘skated’ across fields and our shiny boots soon turned into muddy wedges. The weather kept fine for us which was a relief as it could prove to be a balancing act, getting waterproofs over those muddy boots!
We found a nice sheltered spot for lunch, overlooking fields.
The Sugar Beet Factory was gradually getting closer as we wearily completed our 11.6 mile walk. We did do a slight detour but are fairly confident that we clocked this mileage.
In usual fashion, we found a pub close by for refreshment. Although it was a fine day, good company and exercise we did feel that the walk was poor. So a general plea to the route planner, please don’t repeat this one!
