Annual Meal

Saturday 4th February 2012

Our annual meal (which is our version of the Christmas Meal) this year will be at the Fitzwilliam Arms in Marholm. Main courses range from £8 to £14 (see web site for menus. Time 7:30 for 8:00.

We had a good turn out last year, so it is a good time to meet all those members who you never seem to see on a walk. Despite some reservations, the general consensus was that the seat rotation between courses last year was a good idea, so we plan the same again.

Please let Moira know by Sunday 23rd January that you would like to go. If you would like to arrange lift/taxi shares, also let Moira know and she will put people in touch with each other.

Weekend Away in the Peak District

Friday 24th to Sunday 26th February 2012

walk walk Moderate

We have booked into Hartington Youth Hostel in the Peak District. This is a hostel that we walked past not so long ago, and everybody said they would like to stay there. It has 131 beds in a variety of room sizes, many en suite, and one with a double bed called the Luxury Roost.

YHA Hartington is a magnificent manor house standing in its own extensive grounds and dating back to 1611. It offers great comfort within an historic context; boasting oak panelling, stove fires, squishy sofas. Refurbished to a very high standard, this 4–star location offers quality accommodation with numerous small rooms, including several double and twins.

We will travel over on Friday at times to suit car loads with a view to walking on Saturday and Sunday. Walks will be of the “Moderate” grade but “Standard” grade walks may be available if pre–arranged by members with a suitable walk leader.

The cost will be £79.90 (see booking form for options) for members which covers accommodation on Friday and Saturday nights, breakfast and a large packed lunch on Saturday and Sunday and evening meal on Saturday. See booking form for other prices. There is a self–catering kitchen if you want to self cater. Non–members are subject to an additional payment of £3. Mileage costs will be in the order of £20.

Places may be limited. First come first served; members before non-members. If you don’t fancy the Youth Hostel why not look into booking your own accommodation locally.

The booking deadline for this event has passed. The weekend is being arranged by Moira.

Weekend Away – Yorkshire Dales

Saturday 2nd to Tuesday 5th June 2012

walk walk Moderate

In order to take advantage of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend, we have booked into Lodge Youth Hostel. Set above Swaledale this hostel has good facilities and is well placed to walk 2 central parts of the Coast–to–Coast walk as well numerous fell and dale routes; some linear walks may require a taxi to the start.

Our intention is to walk a couple of sections of the Coast–to–Coast walk. There are also more strenuous routes should a group with a suitable walk leader want to pursue them.

We will travel up on Saturday leaving at approx. 9am and travel back Tuesday afternoon. The cost will be £111.15 (see booking form for options) which covers accommodation and evening meal on Saturday, Sunday and Monday and breakfast and large packed lunch on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. 20th Anniversary Celebration

Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July 2012

walk Standard

An event not to be missed – put the date in your diary.

Planning continues, but the latest plan is:

  1. Saturday lunch time – a champagne reception up the top of Mam Tor in the Peak District;
  2. Saturday evening – dinner in a pub in Edale;
  3. Saturday night – Edale Youth Hostel;
  4. Sunday – a walk in the locality;

Our base camp will be in Edale from where we will make the ascent to the peak (1.5 miles and 260m) which we have often scaled over the past 20 years. Dress will be formal evening wear by Oxfam or similar (what have you got at the back of that wardrobe that you never wear?).

We have booked into Edale Youth Hostel on Saturday night, so those who want to stay over can do; or you can just come for the day.

Further details and booking arrangements in due course.

Social by Rail

Saturday 21st July 2012

This event involves taking a train to Oakham for some drinks and lunch at the Grainstore brewery and then returning by train to Stamford for more drinks in some of Stamford’s many hostelries. The train is then taken to return to Peterborough where what happens depends on how people feel. Usually we have a meal. A good day if you like beer. There’s also some walking between the pubs.

The proposed programme is as last year (train times to be confirmed nearer the time):

12:00 to 12:15 Meet in bar of the Great Northern Hotel for first drink
12:52 Train P’Boro to Oakham
13:21 Arrive Oakham for lunch and a drink at the Grainstore brewery
15:43 Train Oakham to Stamford
15:59 Arrive Stamford for more drinks at one or two pubs – possibilities Green Man, Otter’s Pocket , Lord Burghley, Dolphin, Kings Head, The Crown, The Tobie Norris and Periwig
19:59 Train Stamford to P’Boro
20:14 Arrive P’Boro for a meal and a final drink in the Brewery Tap (if it's still open) or the Draper’s Arms if you’re still up for it.

Taxis home are probably the order of the day. The train fare is approximately £10.10. Food and beer money is extra!

If you live in Stamford you can meet up with us either on the Oakham train or when we get back to Stamford.

Please give Alan a ring to let him know you are coming.

Friday 24th August 2012

Join us at the Peterborough Beer Festival – about the biggest in the country with over 350 different beers. If you don’t like beer, there are plenty of wines and ciders plus plenty of taxis home.

If you are coming, give Alan a ring to arrange meet up arrangements. It’s very noisy in the tents and it is difficult to hear mobile phones to make contact on the night. The entry fee is £9.00 including a refundable £3.00 for a glass. For more details see www.beer-fest.org.uk

Weekend Away in Dordogne, France

Thursday 4th to Monday 8th October 2012

walk walk Moderate

Roger has invited us to his “pad” in the Dordogne Valley in France. Accommodation (free of charge) is for up to 10 with other possibilities in a nearby town or tent on the lawn. Meals will be taken communally at the house with chores being shared or we will eat out (a 5 course lunch will only cost between 14-16€, including wine!).

Three full days of walking in the Dordogne Valley near St Cere and Rocamadour, with perhaps a restaurant stop for lunch one day (what will our chairman say!). Visit three of the 100 most beautiful villages in France (Autoire, Loubressac and Carennac).

Accommodation in the house is relatively open–plan and although privacy can be assured, it may not be quite as private as separate male/female dormitories in a youth hostel. Roger Hall will explain further if requested.

Overall cost is approximately £280, including travel, car hire and an estimate for food – whether you travel by air or train and stay at the house. This budget does not include for any eating out. Travel by air takes about 8 hrs door to door, train takes about 10.5 hrs but is less cramped and more relaxing.

Travel by car is possible but it is a very long day’s journey (12–14 hrs), however the costs would reduce to about £140 based on 3 people sharing.

We have made this a two–booter weekend (terrain similar to Peak District), but there are suitable routes for one-booters providing a suitable leader is pre–arranged. There are also more strenuous routes should a group with a suitable walk leader want to pursue them.

Attendees will not be covered by the Walking Club insurance and private travel insurance must be arranged on an individual basis by attendees.

We need a non-refundable deposit of £110 by the end February to secure places, a second payment of £100 by 17th June and the final payment on the weekend. Places are limited. First come first served; members before non-members.

If you would like to book on this trip please complete the form at the end of the newsletter and return with your deposit to Roger by the end of February. If you have any queries, give Roger a call or e-mail him.
