Weekend Away in the Cotswolds

Friday 19th to Sunday 21st February 2010

Stay in a Grade II listed 17th Century town house in the centre of the historic market town of Stow–on–the–Wold. The accommodation has been recently refurbished providing smaller rooms, many en–suite, thanks to Heritage Lottery funding. Enjoy freshly prepared meals overlooking the town square, including a famous Cotswold Country Breakfast.

We have booked into Stow–on–the–Wold Youth Hostel which has 1x1, 2x4, 4x6, 1x7 and 1x8–bedded rooms.

We will travel over on Friday at times to suit car loads with a view to walking on Saturday and Sunday. Distances to suit whoever comes, splitting into groups as necessary.

The cost will be £64.95 (see booking form for options) for members which covers accommodation on Friday and Saturday nights, breakfast and a large packed lunch on Saturday and Sunday and evening meal on Saturday. See booking form for other prices. There is a self–catering kitchen if you want to self cater. Non-members are subject to an additional payment of £3. Mileage costs will be in the order of £16.

If you don’t fancy the Youth Hostel why not look into booking your own accommodation locally.

The booking deadline for this weekend has passed. The organiser is Andy.

Ten Pin Bowling

Saturday 13th March 2010

bowling

We have not tried this for a while and it is usually a fun evening. We start by splitting into two teams – picking names out of a hat. For the second game, the Chairman may alter the sides if we find that we actually have people who can knock some pins down and they are all on the same side.

It will be at the Bretton Bowl in the early evening and will cost about £11. We’ll contact you nearer the time by e–mail as we need to book and pay in advance so need to know numbers. Chris is the organiser.

Easter in the Lakes – Grasmere

Friday 2nd to Monday 5th April 2010

We have booked into Thorney How Youth Hostel which was the first property bought by the YHA in 1931 and, while the original farmhouse retains its character, it has been extended and modernised. It’s a 15–minute walk to Grasmere’s town centre, making this a secluded spot for walkers with virtually no passing traffic. There are routes to suit all levels of abilities – hikers will want to head into the hills but there are nine lakes and tarns within reach for those wanting shorter expeditions. Wainwright’s Coast–to–Coast long–distance path also passes the front door.

Facilities include lounge, self–catering kitchen, common room, drying room, showers and toilets. There are 49 beds – 2x2, 3x4, 1x5, 2x6 and 2x10+ bed rooms.

We will travel up on Friday leaving at approx. 9am and travel back Monday afternoon. The cost will be £115.05 (see booking form for options) which covers accommodation and evening meal on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and breakfast and large packed lunch on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. If you wish to self cater the cost will be £53.85. Mileage costs will be in the order of £40. Non–members are subject to an additional payment of £3.

You need to send a completed booking form (to be found at the end of the Newsletter) together with your payment to Angela by Sunday 31st January to book your place.

Places may be limited. First come first served; members before non–members. If you don’t fancy the Youth Hostel why not look into booking your own accommodation locally.

12:56 Train P’Boro to Oakham
13:24 Arrive Oakham for lunch and a drink at the Grainstore brewery
15:41 Train Oakham to Stamford
15:57 Arrive Stamford for more drinks at one or two pubs – possibilities Green Man, Otter’s Pocket , Lord Burghley, Dolphin, Kings Head and Periwig
19:58 Train Stamford to P’Boro
20:15 Arrive P’Boro for a meal and a final drink in the Brewery Tap (if it's still open) or the Draper’s Arms if you’re still up for it.

Taxis home are probably the order of the day. The train fare is approximately £7.70. Food and beer money is extra!

If you live in Stamford you can meet up with us either on the Oakham train or when we get back to Stamford.
